Find out what to expect (about your ultrasound) when you’re expecting.
If you just recently got that positive pregnancy test then you may already be glowing with excitement. Congratulations are certainly in order. Of course, there are things you’ll need to think about in order to keep you and your growing baby healthy and happy during those 40 weeks. One of those things will be to visit one of our Englewood and Lone Tree, CO, OBGYNs for routine checkups. Once you find out you’re pregnant it’s time to schedule your first appointment.
During this first appointment, our obstetrician will most likely perform your very first ultrasound. If you’ve never had an ultrasound before you may be wondering why they are performed and what to expect from the process.
First and foremost, an ultrasound gives you the opportunity to get
You may have to undergo several ultrasounds throughout your pregnancy. These ultrasounds are used to detect any potential genetic or development issues early on. Ultrasounds can safely be performed at any stage of your pregnancy, and at around 18-19 weeks you may get an ultrasound in order to check for certain genetic abnormalities.
What happens during an ultrasound?
If it’s your very first ultrasound we will explain what we will do and what is involved during your very first appointment. You will lie down for the entirety of your ultrasound. A gel will then be placed on your stomach and a handheld device is guided over your stomach to give us a detailed view of your baby. Over time, we will be able to detect the baby’s heart beating and spine, as well as determine the baby’s gender.
Is an ultrasound uncomfortable?
An ultrasound is non-invasive and completely painless; however, you may find it a little uncomfortable to have the ultrasound device pressed against your stomach or within the vaginal walls (if we are performing a transvaginal ultrasound). Since it can take anywhere from 30-45 minutes to complete the exam, let us know if you need to sit up or take a break at any point during the ultrasound. We will do our best to make sure you feel as comfortable as possible. Plus, getting to see your little one as he or she develops is certainly exciting.
